Garbage Collection Schedule

Garbage is collected every two weeks on Thursdays. During the summer, the BLACK container will be emptied every week and the GREEN container every two weeks.

Large items will be picked up on specific dates in May and September.
Call the Municipal Office for details.

Green Etiquette

The Municipality belongs to the Regie Intermunicipale de Récuperation des Hautes Laurentides.

Recyclables placed in the green cart will be further sorted for processing. You can help reduce the costs of this processing.

Each household will receive two carts: one black cart for regular garbage and one green cart for recyclables.

Your carts should be washed and rinsed out with a mild detergent from time to time. If you have a malfunctioning cart, broken hinge or wheel, please call to have it replaced or repaired. The municipality will be charging residents to replace stolen or missing garbage containers.

Being green is a joint effort amongst all of us. You can play your part!

    Arundel Volunteer Fire Dept.

In case of Fire CALL 911

Have a plan of action for your family. What to do. Who is responsible for placing the call. Be sure the children understand they are to immediately leave the home and proceed to a prearranged place well away from the house to assemble and they are not to re-enter for any reason. A plan of action can save time and lives especially if a fire breaks out at night when everyone is asleep.

Install at least one smoke detector on each level of your home and in each bedroom. If you wish information about proper placement do not hesitate to call the municipal office at 687-3991 and you will be put in touch with a member of the fire department.

If you heat with wood, clean your chimney on a regular schedule.

Store propane cylinders outside and preferably in a location where if a house fire occurs the propane cylinders will not be exposed. They are a potential bomb and a threat not only to yourself but to fire fighters.

Verifying the charge of your fire extinguishers and changing the batteries once a year in your smoke detectors should be as routine to you as going to the dentist and doctor at least once a year for a check-up!

A message from Neill Swail - Fire Chief

    Question:

When does the situation warrant calling the Fire Department?

    Answer:

As soon as it becomes apparent that you have a fire or an emergency

    no matter how small.

    Time is of the Essence

How many times have you heard of someone you know, who, rather than call in a tradesman, elected to "fix" the problem himself? The same can be said of someone who discovers a "small" fire in a corner of their basement. Human nature tells us "don't cause a big fuss, I can handle it myself."

Herein lies one of the biggest obstacles to fire fighting. The time lost between when a fire is discovered and when the alarm is called in. Many people chose to try to put the fire out themselves; and if the attempt fails, precious minutes have passed, minutes that could have been used to get proper equipment and manpower to the scene.

I am by no means discounting the usefulness of extinguishers and garden hose as excellent suppression tools, but a quick response by the Fire Department must be preceded by a fast-thinking person at the scene calling in the alarm.

Fire Plan - It can save lives

The Arundel Fire Department hosts a benefit supper during the summer. This year the event will take place on Canada Day Weekend. A schedule will be posted in the coming months. Please come and support your local fire department.

    Members

    Ken Hollomby
    Linsay Laughren
    Barrie Graham

The provincial law "An Act Respecting Land Use Planning" requires that municipal by-laws be reviewed and revised within five years after their adoption. With this in mind and in compliance with the Act, the Arundel Municipal Council has established a Planning Advisory Committe (PAC) with direct citizen involvement to facilitate this process. ThePAC is mandated to:

Study the planning and zoning by-laws of the municipality and make recommendations to council regarding possible modifications or improvements to them. This process should take into consideration any complaints or suggestions received from residents.

Study applications for minor exemptions which are permitted in the application of certain limited sections of the by-laws and then make recommendations to council.

Members:The PAC is composed of five voting members. Three of these members are residents of the municipality who have been appointed by council, the two other members are municipal councillors appointed to the PAC by the council. The building inspector, the municipal secretary and the mayor are also members but they have no vote.

Powers: The Act makes it clear the PAC has no decision-making powers. The function of the PAC is to advise the council. Decision-making power rests with the council which is directly responsible to the citizens.

The municipal council has completed a thorough review of the existing by-laws and have implemented what are considered to be appropriate modifications and improvements. The PAC has played an important advisory role in this project.

    Building Permits and Inspection

    Mr. Robert Elmslie
    Inspector
    687-3991
    email: robertelmslie@sympatico.ca

    Permits

Arundel by-laws specify a building permit must be obtained prior to the construction, renovation, or alteration of any structure.

    Septic

It is recommended that septic tanks be pumped at least once every two years in a residence of continuous occupancy and once every four years in seasonal dwellings. The purpose of pumping is to reduce the possibility of carryover of solid material, not yet decomposed, into the pipes of the absorption field.

When emptying the tank there is no need to flush out or disinfect the tank. It is recommended a thin layer of mud remain at the bottom of the tank so as to accelerate the bacterial action.

The Ministry of the Environment has recently modified the regulations concerning the handling of waste water from individual residences. This change allows for the installation of a bio-filtration system in place of conventional absorption fields under certain circumstances.

    Recommendation

Anyone contemplating a change to their bathroom fixtures should consider a low flow toilet of 1.6 litres. A low flow toilet with an existing or new septic system puts less water into the soil for purification. Many jurisdictions have adopted this technology as a legal requirement in new installations.

For additional information or to obtain a permit please contact the building inspector.
